Hip hip hooray!

L doesn't know that people don't really say hip hip hooray!

He shouts it when he's excited, and it's so classically him.

Hip hip hooray, Mom's home!

Jam sandwiches for lunch!?  Hip hip hooray!

I'm not going to be the one to tell him.
Besides, I almost let it slip a few times today, myself.

Whim and the boys taped a commercial for Ikea today and it was ridiculously fun. As if Ikea needed any more reasons to be my favorite thing.

Plus, they we got to play in the model bedrooms while we waited, which I always want to do every time we go there.

It's a promo for Father's Day (Dec 5th in Thailand) and it's supposed to go online Monday...but I'm skeptical. I'll post a link if it really does.

The boys had a blast, reveling in all the attention, and it was so quick and easy.  Afterward, Whim dutifully took them straight to the toy store to "teach them a lesson about earning and the value of money."*

And it's Friday.  Isn't that enough to justify a few hip hip hoorays?

*aka Whim has wanted a remote control car since M was a fetus.

Happy thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day means one thing in this house: Christmas trees!

No turkey, no pumpkin pie. No cousins and boiling cranberries and waiting for the parade to start.  But... we have our tree.  It's not the same special moments that I loved as a kid, but it's a new kind of special.

Ikea came through again with live Christmas trees.

So I had just the plan for our old artificial tree...

I even splurged on cute Ikea wrapping paper for their advent books.

Happy thanksgiving! And Merry Christmas trees!

PSA

Did you know you can bake cookies in a muffin tin?

Theoretically.  If, for example, your five year old scrubbed your (only, nonstick) cookie sheet with steel wool and you didn't want to buy a new one.

You could still make lovely, thick cookies. There wouldn't be any complaints.  They even make perfect circles.
They boys and I made pumpkin cookies this way, over the weekend.  We replaced/reduced the 1-1/2 cups of sugar with 1/2 cup of honey (and used olive oil instead of butter since we didn't have any) and they were soft, with just enough sweetness.  Actually, by the time we drizzled them with cinnamon glaze, you didn't miss the sugar at all.

It's that time of year!

I will never complain that the malls have Christmas decorations out "too early".  There is no too early in my book.

We watch "Elf" the day after Halloween to ring in the season, and put up the tree on Thanksgiving day.

Today I had a hunch that another favorite holiday tradition would be ready, and I was right!   Elf yourself!

International day

Earlier this month was International day at ICS. We have it every year, but everything at school is more fun, now that M goes.

All the kids dressed up in their country's traditional dress.  M is wearing a northern Thai/hill tribe outfit.

L joined in after school, too, in his best try at a paddy farmer's outfit.

It was a pretty big event.  There were games, booths, food, and a show with all kinds of traditional performances.

The boys' favorite part? Someone had a jar of bubbles.

It is pretty hard to beat that.

I can't wait for next year when L's at school, too!

This kid

This kid.
The same one who took 9 weeks to earn a freaking plastic ring from his teacher's treasure box...
Yesterday his principal commented on his honesty and good character.  He has always been honest, it's just his nature, but I'm so pleased because it means he's shaping a reputation he can be proud of, despite the hard early weeks.

Then today- this!  This time it took less than a month! (3 weeks and a day, but who's counting).

Artists

They say all kids are artists, it's just a matter of stopping them before they mess it up.

I kind of have to agree.

Unfinished = lovely

Happy birthday to me

Today is my birthday.

Instead of that tired old breakfast in bed routine, my boys decided to go a different route.

We kicked off the day with vomiting in bed courtesy of one of my sweeties, followed immediately by a wet bed from the other.

Whim miraculously slept through it all, and despite all odds, is still asleep now- several hours later.

Hmm....

At least it can only get better from here.

It's a good thing you're so cute, mister.
Same goes for you, Whim!
